New Light on the Square of Oppositions and its Nameless Corner

چکیده

It has been pointed out that there is no primitive name in natural and formal languages for one corner of the famous square of oppositions. We have all, some and no, but no primitive name for not all. It is true also in the modal version of the square, we have necessary, possible and impossible, but no primitive name for not necessary. I shed here a new light on this mysterious non-lexicalisation of the southeast corner of the square of oppositions, the so-called O-corner, by establishing some connections between negations and modalities. The E-corner, impossible, is a paracomplete negation (intuitionistic negation if the underlying modal logic is S4) and the O-corner, not necessary, is a paraconsistent negation. I argue that the three notions of opposition of the square of oppositions (contradiction, contrariety, subcontrariety) correspond to three notions of negation (classical, paracomplete, paraconsistent). We get a better understanding of these relations of opposition in the perspective of Blanché’s hexagon and furthermore in the perspective of a three dimensional object, a stellar dodecahedron of oppositions that I present at the end of the paper.

A Mathematical Analysis of New L-curve to Estimate the Parameters of Regularization in TSVD Method

A new technique to find the optimization parameter in TSVD regularization method is based on a curve which is drawn against the residual norm [5]. Since the TSVD regularization is a method with discrete regularization parameter, then the above-mentioned curve is also discrete. In this paper we present a mathematical analysis of this curve, showing that the curve has L-shaped path very similar t...

Revisiting argumentation in light of squares of oppositions

Formal AI models of argumentation define arguments as reasons that support claims. Such arguments may be attacked by other arguments. The main issue is then to identify the accepted ones. Works in linguistics rather focus on understanding the notion of argument, identifying its types, and describing different forms of counter-argumentation. This paper advocates that such typologies are instrume...

A deconstructive critique of a mystical anecdote from the book Ronaq al-Majalis [The Prosperity of Meetings]

Deconstruction was first introduced in the thought of Jacques Derrida as a way of re-reading texts and questioning its presuppositions. This type of critique seeks to find new meanings by finding binary oppositions in the text and disrupting the superiority and domination of one side over the other, and on the other hand, by discovering gaps and discontinuities that have arisen in the text...

Saccade-related activity in the primate superior colliculus depends on the presence of local landmarks at the saccade endpoint.

Saccade-related discharge in the superior colliculus is greater for saccades made to a spot of light than for saccades in complete darkness. However, it is unclear whether this enhancement is due to the discontinuity of the spot or due to its being a new object of fixation. In these experiments, we examined the saccade-related activity of intermediate-layer neurons in the primate superior colli...
